Caché
February 21 - March 12, 2014
Alliance française Venise, Casino Venier, Venice, ITALY
Caché casts an alluring light on human desire, secrecy, and voyeurism. Exhibited at the historic Casino Venier in San Marco in Venice, Caché invokes the indulgence and luxury that once made the place notorious as the vehicle for contemporary conceptions of propriety and chivalry. Whether peering through handkerchiefs of Venetian lace into hazily lit shadowboxes or at one’s reflection obscured by translucent prints of nudes that occupy the Casino’s antique mirrors, the viewer is cast as voyeur as they navigate the relationship between objectivity, transgression and sexuality. Through its combination of the Classical nude female figure, contemporary sculptural format, and decorative detailing, Caché explores the contrast between what is intimate and what is appropriate.
